Congratulations on the upcoming arrival of your new little one! Decorating and styling a baby nursery can be a fun and exciting process, but it can also be overwhelming with so many options and decisions to make. Here are a few tips to help you create a beautiful and functional space for your baby:

Start with a theme

Start with a theme that’s near and dear to your heart. Have you always dreamed of woodland creatures in your baby’s nursery? Something soft and floral? Simple and neutral? During the long 9 months of pregnancy or even before that, it’s easy to do lots of daydreaming of what your life will look like as family, including what baby’s room will look like. These images are from baby F’s Portland, Oregon newborn session with the most GORGEOUS star and moon-themed nursery. Her newborn session was as dreamy as her nursery and it was such an honor to photograph these special moments!

Create a dreamy nursery with a moon and stars theme. Hang a mobile above the crib, add starry wall decals and choose soft, celestial-inspired colors

choose a color scheme

After you have a nursery theme, choose a color scheme to help guide your decorating decisions and create a cohesive look when it comes to room colors. Soft, neutral colors like white, grey, and pale pastel shades are popular choices for baby nurseries, as they can easily be paired with a variety of patterns. A wallpaper accent wall like this stars and moon featured today adds a fun pop of contrast and fun! I also really love board and batten accent walls in nurseries for some extra interest.

design the layout of furniture

Consider the layout and flow of the room: Think about the furniture and decor you will need in the nursery, and arrange the items in a way that allows for easy movement and access. For example, you may want to place the changing table near the crib so you can easily change your baby's diaper without having to walk across the room. With so many styles available online, it’s easy to choose a crib to fit your room theme.

Add storage

Add storage solutions: Babies come with a lot of gear, clothing, and diapers, so having plenty of storage options is essential in a nursery. Invest in a dresser with drawers and shelves, as well as bins and baskets to keep smaller items organized. If you have a closet in your nursery, create a way to organize clothes of different sizes, as babies grow up so fast and you will need access to the next size up.

Add personal touches

Incorporate personal touches: Add some personal touches to the nursery to make it feel like your own. This could be in the form of wall art, a special quilt or blanket from a grandparent, or a unique bookshelf to display baby books.

most important: keep it practical

Keep it practical: While it's fun to make the nursery a visually appealing space, remember that it's also a functional room where you'll be spending a lot of time with your baby. Choose furniture and decor that are practical and easy to clean, and consider adding features like a glider or rocking chair for those late-night feedings. Make sure you save room for important (less pretty) items like a diaper pale.

Remember to have fun with the process and enjoy the opportunity to create a special space for your growing family. Also, keep in mind that your baby may not even sleep in his or her nursery for the first few weeks or even months so don’t put so much pressure on yourself to get it done quickly.
