Midwifery Care at OHSU | A Birth Experience Interview

mother and father after birth of their newborn son at OHSU

Today’s blog post is a little bit different from the rest. Today I am sharing some birth photography and videography instead of my usual in-home newborn photography. At this time I do not offer birth photography, but I did have the honor of photographing my cousin Helen’s birth. It was a very special birth experience to witness and photograph because Helen’s best friend caught the baby! Every birth experience is unique but I thought it would be good insight to share this OHSU birthing center experience with other local Oregon moms. If you are expecting a little one on the way and thinking of delivering at OHSU in Portland, I hope you find this helpful!

Why did you choose OHSU for the birth of your son?

I went to two different facilities but ultimately chose OHSU midwives. The other doctor's office felt very standard but dry. OHSU was more in-depth and personable.

What was your overall experience giving birth at this OSHU?

I had an amazing and empowering experience giving birth at OHSU. I had providers that I trusted and a wonderful support system surrounding me.

What did your doctors, nurses, or midwives do espe-cially well during your care?

I had a very long labor and unmedicated birth. The midwives and nurses showed my husband and cousin some counter pressure poses that reduced my labor pains. The postpartum nurses were amazing in every aspect. I was completely wiped out after birth and wasn't able to move much.

Did your birth team respect and follow your birthing plan?

I felt like my birth plan was respected and followed. Their standard practices were very similar to my initial requests. I did appreciate the dimmed lights and the ambiance that was provided while in active labor.

Were there any specific aspects of the hospital's facilities or amenities that you found particularly helpful or comforting during your stay?

Because I went with the midwives at OHSU I was able to labor in the tub and had an option of a waterbirth. I regret not signing for the waterbirth. They had wireless baby monitors which allowed me to walk around more freely. They provided a yoga ball, warm blankets/pillows, and food 24/7!

Were you satisfied with the level of communication and information provided to you throughout your stay?

When there was a shift change everyone would come and introduce themselves to us. We were informed of everything happening before it happened or asked for consent before any exams.  I was very satisfied with the communication!

Other special things about your birth experience at this hospital?

I was worried because we didnt get to make a carseat safety appt ahead of time. But, before my discharge their carseat safety specialist went with my husband and made sure the base was on correctly and showed us how to place our son in properly.

Everyone went above and beyond to make me feel as comfortable as I could which allowed me to be fully present for the birth of our son! I was honestly sad to leave the hospital and so thankful for my loving husband, supportive friends/ family, and everyone at OHSU!
