Sun, Sand & Snuggles: Your Guide to Oregon Coast Family Photos
The Oregon Coast is the perfect place to capture family memories. The salty breeze, dramatic cliffs, and soft, golden light create a stunning backdrop for family photos. As a Portland family photographer, I love heading out to the coast a few times each summer to capture these moments for families. From extended family vacation sessions to beach mini sessions, the coast is an ideal setting for timeless family photos.
Oregon Coast Family Photographers – How to Find Your Perfect Fit
Choosing a photographer isn’t just about pretty photos. It’s about finding someone who gets you and your family, someone who can capture those real, honest moments that feel like you. Here’s how to know you’ve found the one:
Check Their Style: Do they capture those candid, in-between moments or stick to posed portraits? What is my style? I love BOTH!
Experience Matters: Coastal sessions can get wild with wind, sand, unpredictable light. Make sure they’re used to shooting in all kinds of coastal weather.
Location Love: Seaside, Oregon photographer? Not every Portland photographer heads to the coast, so double-check they’re willing to make the drive.
Get Personal: Take a peek at their photographer About page. Do they feel like someone you’d grab coffee with? If yes, you’re on the right track.

Best Oregon Coast Photography Locations
As an oregon coast family photographer based in Portland, Oregon I look for beaches that are a 2 hour or less drive away from the city, and one with beautiful landscape. Some of my favorite spots for family photos on the Oregon Coast include:
Hug Point: This spot is known for its tide pools, rock formations, and a beautiful waterfall. It is ideal for playful, candid moments.
Cannon Beach: Haystack Rock and the wide, sandy beach make this a classic spot for family photos, especially during sunset.
Manzanita: With its quiet, laid-back vibe, Manzanita is perfect for intimate, relaxed sessions with your crew.
Mini Sessions for Oregon Coast Family Photos
For families with young children, mini sessions can be the perfect option. As a Portland based Oregon Coast photographer, I pack up my gear and head to the beach each summer for quick, fun sessions. These sessions are great for capturing sweet moments without the time commitment of a full session. Mini sessions are all about keeping it easy and fun. From running along the sand to snuggling up for cozy family shots, these sessions are a wonderful way to document a slice of family life.

What should we wear for a family session at the beach?
Keep it soft and natural…think warm whites, sandy neutrals, and soft blues. Flowing dresses, comfy layers, and light, textured fabrics look amazing in the ocean breeze. Avoid loud patterns or bright colors that steal the show. Add a cozy cardigan or denim jacket for warmth and style.

What time of day is best for a photo session at the coast?
Golden hour is where the magic happens! My beach mini sessions take place in the evening to capture that dreamy golden-hour light, which means in the summer, they can run a little past most little ones’ bedtimes. But trust me, it’s so worth it for the stunning beach views! A great way to make it easier? Consider renting an Airbnb and making a weekend trip out of it! That way, you can enjoy a little coastal getaway, and when the session wraps up, you can head straight back and tuck your little one into bed.
How do we keep the kids happy and engaged during the session?
The coast is like a giant playground, so let them explore and have fun!
Bring a favorite toy or blanket for snuggly moments.
Pack snacks and water to keep them fueled.
Dress in layers to keep them cozy since the weather can shift.
And don’t worry about perfection — the best photos come from the messy, playful moments.
How far in advance should we book a session at the Oregon Coast?
Summer and early fall book up fast, so snagging a spot 2-3 months ahead is a good idea. For mini sessions, keep an eye on my website or join the email list so you don’t miss out.
