How to Prep for Your Family Mini Session
Preparing For a Family Photoshoot Mini Session
Hey mama, you did it! You booked a mini session with me, and I couldn’t be more excited to capture the sweet chaos that is your family. This is going to be fun and easy, but I know getting everyone ready for photos can feel like a lot. Think of this prep guide as your go-to for everything you need to know to make this experience smooth, stress-free, and filled with genuine, joyful moments.
What to Wear: Keep it Simple, Keep it You
When it comes to outfits, less is more. I love keeping things simple and natural so that the focus is all on your beautiful family. Think soft, neutral tones, cozy textures, and a touch of personality. View my graphic below for a simple, step by step guide. Need a second opinion? Shoot me a message and I’d love to help!

Weather: The One Thing We Can’t Control
I wish I could guarantee perfect weather for every session, but the PNW has a mind of its own. If it looks like rain on the date of your outdoor mini session, I’ll be in touch with rescheduling options.
And if it’s overcast? Perfect. Overcast skies actually make for gorgeous, even light that looks oh-so-dreamy in photos.
Bring a Blanket: Cuteness + Comfort
If you’re hoping for some snuggly, sitting-on-the-ground shots (especially for the littles), bring a blanket that coordinates with your outfits. Neutral tones work best, nothing too bright or distracting. Think cozy textures and soft fabrics that you won’t mind sitting on.
What to Expect During Your Session: Let’s Play!
I’m all about making this a fun, laid-back experience for everyone, especially your kiddos. To do this I keep your session very active. I will give you posing “prompts” but keep you and your kiddos moving and playing so everyone stays busy!
Don’t Smile at the Camera unless I say so
I’ll request smiles from time to time but we will never force anyone to smile. And if they’re not in the mood to smile? That’s okay too. Let the kids be kids. If they want to run, let them run. If they need a quick cuddle, give them a cuddle. The best moments come when everyone is relaxed and just being themselves.
Make It Fun: The Secret to Those Genuine Smiles
You know those big, heart-melting giggles? That’s what we’re going for. To get those moments, we keep things light and playful. Peek-a-boo behind my camera? Yes, please. Absolutely. Let’s let go of the idea of “perfect” and lean into the fun.
Bring Bribes (I Mean, Snacks)
Yep, I said it. Bribes work. But keep it simple and non-messy. Think gummies, fruit snacks, or mini marshmallows. And if a little sugar helps them stay happy, I say go for it. Just make sure it’s nothing sticky or too colorful that could end up all over their cute outfits.
After Your Session: Time to View Your Photos and Purchase your Collection
Within 1-2 weeks after your session, you’ll get an email from me letting you know your gallery is ready. That’s when you get to view, choose, and purchase your favorite images.
Here’s the rundown of the mini session collections:
Basic Collection – $200: 8 images
Standard Collection – $250: 15 images + $25 print credit
Signature Collection – $375: Full gallery + $50 print credit
Once you’ve chosen your collection, you’ll be able to download your high-res images and print them however you’d like. Your final investment will be a total of your session fee (you already paid this when you booked your session) plus the digital image collection of your choice.
Final Thoughts: Let Go and Love On Your People
Family photos can feel stressful - getting everyone dressed, making sure nobody melts down, praying for good weather. But here’s the secret: the best photos come when you just let go.
I’ll handle the posing and the silly noises. Your job? Just love on your people. Hug your babies, kiss their cheeks, snuggle up close. That’s where the real magic happens, and that’s exactly what I want to capture.
Ready to make some memories? I can’t wait to see you soon!
